According to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, "Stigma remains the single most important barrier to public action. It is a main reason why too many people are afraid to see a doctor to determine whether they have the disease, or to seek treatment if so. It helps make AIDS the silent killer, because people fear the social disgrace of speaking about it, or taking easily available precautions. Stigma is a chief reason why the AIDS epidemic continues to devastate societies around the world."

Discrimination against those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS includes both the fear of getting the disease and also negative assumptions about people who have a positive HIV diagnosis. AIDS-related stigma has had a profound effect on the epidemic’s course. The World Health Organization cites fear of stigma and discrimination as the main reason why people are reluctant to be tested, to disclose their HIV status or to take antiretroviral drugs.

It's time we build coalitions to fight stigma. Activism, education, enlightened laws, and policies are key. But it begins with openness and will to speak out. Schools should teach respect and understanding. Religious leaders should speak acceptance. The media should condemn prejudice and use its influence to advance social change, from securing legal protections to ensuring access to health care.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity for all of us to learn the facts about HIV, as well as other transmitted infections. By increasing the understanding of how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and the reality of living with HIV today - we can use this knowledge to protect our own health and the health of others.

Over the weekend, I took some time to reflect on FthreeO and what it means to me. FthreeO is activism. It is art. It is creativity. It is education. It is helping. It is community. It is building. It is challenging. It is performance. It is multifaceted. It is belief. It is unique. It is business. It is passion. It is freedom. It is more!

Many times we get caught up in the mix of what we don't have, or what we could be doing differently, or what wasn't successful. When we harp on the negative, we then miss out on or overlook the gems, blessings, and accomplishments. I celebrate FthreeO's accomplishments. To date, FthreeO is home to Hitched by Obie - a Love Movement uniting mixed- and same-sex couples in their love and commitment. FthreeO also houses drobieford3rd online, and Styled by Obie. I'm really proud of these units, the projects we've been able to produce, and our forthcoming projects. I do not question my many passions. Rather, I am awesomely grateful for the opportunity to realize these varied gifts and to share them with the world.

I was recently contacted by a couple models who are in the larval stage. They seek my assistance in their metamorphosis. That sparked something within me. As much as I love performing and being in front of the camera, I also possess energy for helping develop, advocating for, and working with other artists still. Apparently, other artists recognize this energy within me as well.

I sense that I may develop another face on the FthreeO mount rushmore. Stay tuned.

A Note from the Owner - FthreeO 2010: Year in Review

It's been a year of excitement, challenge, and growth. 2010 found FthreeO Talent Agency in its second year as an operating company. As I blogged earlier this year, building a company, from the ground up is incredibly bold, and not for the faint of heart. This year, we learned that embracing challenges made FthreeO an even better talent agency. In fact, our perseverance and social consciousness inspired our tagline: "Be more. Be FthreeO."

I am so proud of FthreeO Talent Agency and all that we accomplished this year. As an emerging, socially conscious talent agency, our 2010 goals included: increasing our talent pool, booking projects, and broadening our visibility within the Central Ohio region. We were able to meet our goals and more.

FthreeO is about quality of talent, not quantity. This year, we signed Fantastic three Original speakers and models, including: Hondre, Quincy, Heather, & Kristin.

We began the year with a booking for the Central Ohio March of Dimes. We concluded the year booking an editorial for TDC Photography. In fact, TDC Photography has been a fabulous friend to FthreeO, and an awesome partner in many of our projects this year. Alongside our work with the above, we also booked projects for: Columbus City Schools, Hershey's, Home for the Holidays, HP, Mercedes Benz, The Ohio Lottery, 83 Gallery, Brigade Clothing, and fotoimagesbyken.

Just as we made a difference for the above clients, we made an even bigger impact within our community as major partners with: In Christy's Shoes, Columbus City Schools' Career Day, A T-Shirt to Change The World, and AIDS Walk 2010.

We also created FthreeOtelevision, for which we have some exciting projects slated for 2011, including: Made for You & Me, The Obie Chronicles, and FthreeO in Reality.

And so, there you have it, FthreeO Talent Agency's 2010: a Fantastic three Original year! I must thank our talent for their partnership, continued patience, and belief as we build and grow together. Our talent are top-notch artists, and remarkable people. To our clients and community partners, we appreciate all of your bookings, collaborations, and partnerships. The facts about HIV/AIDS are staggering. Just in Ohio, Nearly 20% of all HIV/AIDS cases live in Central Ohio; 59% of people living with HIV in Central Ohio have run out of money for food, while 17% have been homeless in the last 12 months. Nationally, it is reported that every hour of every day, two young Americans between the ages of 13 and 24 contract the HIV virus, and women comprise the fastest-growing population of newly diagnosed cases.

Join us in our continued fight against HIV/AIDS, especially today: December 1, 2010 - World AIDS Day. How might you take action today or on the days that follow? Check out some suggestions below (courtesy: aids.gov):

•Get tested for HIV.

•Talk with your health care provider about your risks for HIV.

•Learn about the risk factors for acquiring HIV.

•Decide not to engage in high risk behaviors.

•Practice safer methods to prevent HIV.

•Talk about HIV prevention with family, friends, and colleagues.

•Tell people about why this Day is important to you.

•Talk about the epidemic’s impact on your community with friends and family.

•Provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS.

•Volunteer at and/or Donate $$ to a local organization that serves people living with HIV.

•Ask community leaders to increase their response to addressing the epidemic.

•Get involved with or host an event for the Awareness Day in your community.

Faith Mission is known by many as not only a place for a hot meal and warm bed, but also a haven of hope. As an open-access agency and safe environment for homeless men and women, Faith Mission does not take for granted the support of the community. This is the reason for Faith Mission's Community Celebration - to say thank you to the community through entertainment and fellowship.

DJ O Sharp and MC Justin Luvv, both from Columbus' WCKX - Power 107.5, served as hosts for this year's event, which featured top-notch entertainment, including: Eastmoor Academy Mixed Ensemble, Comedian J. Cokes, Gregg Swan & the Late Crew, The Directions for Youth & Families Drum and Dance Ensemble, The Kingdom Force, Anointed Voices, and The Traci Wurschmidt Band. The program also featured, Danielle Williams, the winner of this year's logo design challenge, A T-Shirt to Change The World.

A T-Shirt to Change The World is your opportunity to create and design a socially conscious logo that focuses on any one of Faith Mission's goals: eliminating hunger, ending homelessness, providing healing, or inspiring hope. This challenge is open to anyone, including single and team participants. There is no cost to participate.

A total of ten logo designs and their designers will be chosen and featured at Faith Mission’s Community Celebration on November 21, 2010 at the historic Lincoln Theatre. Four of those designers will receive special honors and a gift package as their logo design will be selected to appear on a T-shirt (one logo per goal) and modeled at the celebration. A Note From The Owner: Embrace Challenge.

"Embrace that which challenges you, for your achievement will be that much sweeter." This is one of my original phrases of empowerment. It is particularly uplifting as of late. You are free to use it, but be sure to give me proper credit in your citation;-)! FthreeO Talent Agency is officially a year old as an operating business, and two years old in its founding! I feel very fortunate to say that. As a company though, we have only just begun. If anyone tells you that beginning a business from the ground up is easy, check their temperature for fever and their pupils for dilation.

I think that many entrepreneurs and business owners enter into any new business venture with loads of excitement, zeal, and swagger...and we should! Whether it's the invention of the year, the novel concept in self help, or the hottest emerging talent agency (insert FthreeO here), new business owners should march that march of confidence and pride because when they stumble (and they will in fact stumble, if not fall hard), they must always remind themselves of who they are (the hottest emerging talent agency) and rely on that same confidence, excitement, and swagger to see them through. There are so many elements to owning a business. From risk-taking (be it calculated or not) to branding to talent acquisition to marketing to self pep talks...there's never a dull moment; and the opportunities to stumble are fruitful.

Have I ever stumbled? Oh, sure. I am challenged everyday because everyday I am thinking and working on how I can continue to build FthreeO and make it better. Now don't get me wrong, it sucks to stumble. But without challenge, how is a business owner to learn? I am well-read, current on best practices, but experience has been a true teacher; and I learn something new everyday. I will distinguish here that a stumble can be a challenge, but a challenge is not necessarily a stumble. I am challenged everyday. Fortunately, I do not stumble everyday...at least not where FthreeO is concerned.

There are some exciting developments underway for FthreeO. Even with those, FthreeO is still a very new talent agency. I am so grateful for the talent we have, and I just want to do all that I can to assist in opportunities for them. I am thrilled that clients have noticed FthreeO and have booked our talent for their projects or inquired about our services. I knew a "Fantastic three Original" talent agency with a socially conscious edge could truly make a difference! Now is that confidence, or what? That being said, there's a lot more work for us to do. We seek more talent. We seek more clients. We seek to do more in the community. Simply put, we seek to be more...embracing the challenges, learning from the stumbles, and enjoying the achievements along the way.

recently, FthreeO had the opportunity to work with the awesome ken. outfitted in FthreeO logo tees, tank tops, bare chests, and washed & dark denims, the models made every look, and owned everything in each image lensed by ken. we absolutely loved ken's approach, "let's see where this takes us," because with each captured image, a story emerged that was more interesting than the one before it. the drops of rain, which constantly threatened the rays of sunshine, only added more depth and plenty of plot twists to our story.

Career Day at Scottwood Elementary!

FthreeO's owner, Dr. Obie Ford lll, felt honored to be invited to present at Scottwood Elementary School's Career Day on May 7. Dr. Obie spoke with four different groups of 4th and 5th graders about entrepreneurship, and how his education helped him achieve his goals. The sessions were very interactive as each learner had the opportunity to ask questions, volunteer to "audition" for a talent show, and share with the group their goals and aspirations for the future. Our world will be in great hands as future artists, doctors, entertainers, politicians, teachers, and professional athletes are currently attending Scottwood Elementary School!

In Christy's Shoes is an annual benefit in memory of a courageous woman, Christy Levy Peters, who lost her battle with terminal brain cancer at the age of 33. The decision to join forces with the organization, Dress for Success, seemed fitting as it encompasses two of Christy's loves: helping people and fashionable shoes. Dress for Success is a non-profit organization that impacts our community through empowering women who seek to re-enter the workforce. They provide women with resources, dress attire, and a level of support that enables them opportunities to be successful.

This year's event was held Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Miranova in downtown Columbus. The evening consisted of women who shared success stories as partners with the organization, Dress for Success. The event also included a fashion show which featured FthreeO models, Arianna Galligher and Andria "Diva" Williams. They modeled the latest in designer footwear and beautiful jewelry provided by sponsors DSW and Galleria Evangelia.

In Christy's Shoes celebrates Christy Levy Peters' legacy and makes a difference in the lives of women in need. Multi-generational audience members and sponsors came together to do just that. Something on the Inside: Calling for Submissions...

Something on the Inside is a creative project that seeks to inspire advocacy and raise awareness regarding the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of women and girls.

Female artists are needed to submit original works of art that speak to the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of women and girls. Artwork will be on display in Columbus, OH for the month of March, in recognition of National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 along with a performance by Tracy Walker (www.tracywalker.com). The purpose of the event will be to increase awareness, and raise funds for the Ohio AIDS Coalition.

Be practical. Have a goal, articulate it carefully, study it, read about it and study some more, then give it time and money. A career takes years to create, so don't give up your "day job" to soon. Practice and patience pay off.

Be prepared. Study and learn from the best. Then invest in a great demo, as well as presentable and professional branding and artwork. Always show up ready to work. Bring with you everything you have learned and practiced, then let go and be in the moment. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Be positive. Nothing sends a dream crashing and burning faster than a negative attitude. People can feel fear and self-loathing, and they flee from it as though from a house on fire.

Be professional. Be available (if a client needs you, never say no), be on time; even better, be early. Respect your coach, casting director, client, agent, or anyone you interface with. Show them you are a professional by getting down to business as soon as they indicate they are ready for you. To repeat: Always be available. This is how many of us in this business get jobs...another person is not available and we are.

Be persistent. Never say never! Don't let one negative response upset your vision of where you are going. If you think you have what it takes to be successful, then persevere. Persistence pays off.

Be powerful. Show up as you at your best and your highest expression of who you are.

Be phenomenal. You have permission to be all and everything you want to be. If you are following all the steps above and your intention is clear, you have permission to be the remarkable talent you envision yourself to be. You are unique, and that is extraordinary.

As much as we artists love what we do (to the point that some of us starve so that our craft may survive), hearing NO comes with the territory.

For the novice, that initial NO is one of the harshest rejections ever. You put in the hard work to develop and sharpen your skills. The costs are extraordinary as you invest your emotions, money, and time. "I'm doing it," you tell yourself. You are pumped and ready to razzle dazzle 'em. You feel you have that elusive "it" that will get you signed by the next talent agent/casting director/music exec/art house/etc of your dreams! You audition. You razzle. You dazzle. You wait. Then, you hear...Next! Thank You! Okay...Next! Thanks, but No thanks! Don't call us, we'll call you...Next! no! No! NO!

That first NO is a show stopper, but the show only stops if you allow. For every valley low, there's a mountain high. Enjoy the views from each. Taken constructively, NO is incredibly empowering. Sure, we know what N - O spells. Do you know what it means?

N = New
O = Opportunity

That's right, in this industry, for every NO, there's a New Opportunity right around the corner. As a talent agency that provides its fair share of NO's, we always impress that our NO is someone else's YES; and that someone else's NO is FthreeO's YES! And so, whether you are a novice or seasoned performer, don't give up! We encourage you to hear NO constructively, and to receive YES enthusiastically! The time and emotional expenses are worth it, but remember to invest in a good meal from time to time. Like your art, you need nourishment too!

Our agency’s moniker reads: FthreeO lecture. model. talent. So…what does that mean? It means that our agency represents talent across three categories. First, the lecture division is home to marvelous motivational speakers, diversity trainers, and event emcees. Next, the exclusive model division represents male models for commercial and fashion projects. Last, but certainly not least, the outstanding talent division includes a variety of performing artists, from comedians to musicians. Our goal is to build, grow, and evolve relationships with industry clients by supplying them with top-notch talent. Thus, quality of our talent roster will always trump quantity.

This past weekend found the FthreeO Street Team out and about in full force at Arts Fest ‘09, the Arena District, the Short North, and the patio at U. We are enjoying the buzz surrounding both the talent we represent and our agency. I have had folks come up to me and say, “Are You FthreeO Material?” I love it! I mean, not only is it a great tag line, but it is also an essential question for both prospective talent and the agency as we consider each other for representation.

A Weekend of Fashion, Fun, and FthreeO!

It was a busy weekend of networking and fun last Saturday (5/31). The afternoon found agency associate, Mark “The One” Gambrill and I (pictured right) attending the exclusive, Models and Moguls 2009. This cozy event brought together a few models and industry professionals in Cbus and surrounding areas. It was organized by Randee Cooke, event specialist extraordinaire!

Later that evening, agency associate, Taira “Dahnita” Crockett and I (pictured left) attended the Ohio Urban Fashion Week (UFW) Runway Show, which made its debut here in Cbus at Icon Ultra Lounge. The show featured an assortment of designs from avant-garde, to cultural/heritage, to urban, to vintage.

Eva Marcille (pictured left) was also in attendance to announce Cbus’ Next Top Model (pictured right with me). You may recall that Eva is the winner of America’s Next Top Model (season 3). She currently stars in the Emmy Award winning daytime drama, The Young and the Restless (CBS).

From the massive crowd in attendance this year, I am sure that UFW’s founder, Billy Foster, will bring the show back next year!

The "Dos and Do Nots" of FthreeO Profile Submissions

FthreeO receives a number of profile submissions on a daily basis from talent seeking representation. We review all submissions. Before you submit your profile to FthreeO or attend an FthreeO Open Call, please note:

FthreeO only represents talent 18 years of age and older at this time.
Incomplete profile submissions will not be considered for representation.
Your photos will not be returned to you whether submitted online or by mail.

The quality and content of your profile make all the difference. So, what can you do to make your profile submission stand out from the others? Below is a list of "Dos and Do Nots" when submitting your profile to FthreeO Talent Agency.

Do

Submit photos that are in good taste. Remember, first impressions are important.
Consider the image you want to project.
Pay attention to your grooming and overall appearance.
Submit clear photos that are in focus.
Be sure to submit Color photos; as opposed to only Black/White photos.
Quality snapshots (taken from a digital camera) are welcomed and preferable. It is not necessary to submit professional shots for consideration.
Submit at least one of each: a close-up face shot; a three quarters to the waist up shot; and a full-length body shot.
Keep your hairstyles simple and well-groomed.
Being natural is a good thing. Keep make-up to an absolute minimum, or wear none at all.
Keep clothing simple and in good taste. Remove jewelry.
Incorporate photos that show your versatility and transformability. For example, if you are a male model, you may want to submit a headshot that shows you with facial hair, and a full length shot that shows you clean shaven.
Pay attention to the background in your photos. Try to shoot photos against a plain wall/backdrop or outdoors.
Include a talent resume (if applicable).
Include a Demo (if applicable).
Include your name, stats, and contact information. If you submit your photos by snail mail, include this information on the back of each photo.

Do Not...

Do not submit photos in which you are accompanied by others (i.e., you and your pet; you and your friends; you and your significant other, etc.).
Do not wear accessories (i.e., hats, gloves, glasses).
Do not submit High School Senior Pictures, graduation, prom, or wedding photos.
Do not wear jewelry.
If you are a male model, do not wear make-up in your photos.
Do not submit photos that are suggestive. Please note the distinction between sexy/sensual and trashy. Sexy/sensual is a good thing, trashy is not.
Do not submit nudes! Male models, if you submit a body shot, please wear a swimsuit, shorts, or jeans.
Do not send webcam photos.
Do not submit photos in which you appear so distant that a magnifying glass is needed to see you.
Do not send a written description of yourself in lieu of photos.
Do not send a link to your webpage in lieu of photos.
If you send photos by snail mail, do not send the originals.

With so many great agencies out there, I knew that mine could not be just any agency. Mine had to be different. Mine had to be special. Mine had to be fresh, speaking not only to the now, but also to the future. That is when I began to reflect on my experiences as an activist, educator, model, and speaker. I developed these reflections into vision. I turned my vision into action and in July 2008, FthreeO lecture, model, & talent agency was born!

FthreeO is not your conventional talent agency. We embrace difference. We share our difference. We make a difference. It's been an exciting journey, and we've only just begun. We opened our doors in July 2008, and our search for remarkable talent officially began in 2009. Since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting some great talent, and the honor of signing some really dynamic artists (you will learn about them in the near future). Are you FthreeO material?
